On a red-flag afternoon along the Florida coast, a young lifeguard entered the rough sea to reach swimmers who did not yet recognize their danger. Ocean Rescue bears witness to his quiet readiness—and to the relieved smile of a difficult duty faithfully completed.
The red flag had flown all day at Fort Walton Beach, and the Gulf remained rough after heavy rain. When the swimmers failed to hear the Beach Patrol’s warnings over the surf, the lifeguard took up a rescue buoy and entered the water without hesitation. Their unawareness did not make the danger less real—or his entrusted work less necessary.
